Bright Turquoise

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Turquoise is the perfect color to transition a room into summer. It can cool your home down in the summer heat, and is fun, fresh, and bright.  Try it out in some throw pillows, a rug, or a lamp, all of which can be found at everythingturquoise.com.

But if you’re really looking to cool down and brighten up your space try painting it the right shade of turquoise for your taste.  It could be a shade closer to a traditional blue like Dunn EdwardsTM DEA133 Rare Turquoise or something a bit more bold and modern like Valspar™ 5006-10B Turquoise Tint .

Summertime

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

I am Lesley Smith from paintyourspace.com, an interior designer out of Michigan and I specialize in color consulting. One of my favorite color palettes to work with is citrus colors for summertime. There is just something about a summer’s day that brings citrus colors to my mind as I look outside. The sun shines down on my lime green coleus plant and reminds me of how great lime green, lemon yellow, and orange create a fun palette.

Citrus colors explode a fresh, funky look to any room inside or even an outside porch. Some favorite citrus paint colors to use are Chic lime 396, limon 334, and citrus blossom 123 from Benjamin Moore Classic Colors.

A great way to finish off a nice citrus wall color is with beautiful coordinating fabrics. Designers Guild is one of my favorite companies that takes bold, bright colors and partners them with elegance. The room with the citrus colors shows the funky style that lights up a room.

I like to pair my citrus palette with white to make the colors really pop!  An easy to do a chic and contemporary look that is great for the summer season. Fabrics can bring in the sunshine while the walls remain crisp and white. Here are some fabrics that are offered through Designers Guild that would light up any room.

Bring the summer fun inside to stay awhile!

The Color Of Sunshine

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

My favorite color is yellow and I have loved yellow as far back as I can remember.  Yellow, the color of sunshine, is much needed and being a  Michigander I have to create my own sunshine!

The challenge is to find the perfect shade of yellow which can make all the difference in the world.  My experience with yellow is that yellow paint colors tend to be blinding…you step into the room and need your shades.  The key to the perfect yellow, is a bit of brown to tone down the clarity and intensity.  The perfect color to me is Creme from Pratt & Lambert.  This color is a rich toned down version of sophisticated yellow.

Baby Blue

Preparing the nursery for your newcomer usually starts with wall color followed by a fresh coat of paint. This is the start to an exciting journey!

Now you just found out your having a boy and the color blue pops into your mind! A perfect shade of blue can be a hard pick. I am partial to helping out the first time moms having boys because I have two myself. Girls! Girls! Girls!…..that is all I see and hear about, but boys can be fun too.

The first question I ask my customers is….”Do you have an inspiration piece, bedding, favorite photo, or just something you love?” In order to pick the perfect shade for a customer I need to experience their taste.

Take into consideration all shades of blue varying from light to dark. Favorite blues can range from powder blue to mod turquoise to bold navy. Try to compliment the nursery color with the rest of the decor in your house…the colors should flow as well as style.

Soft, calm blues make for a precious nursery. Benjamin Moore Tear Drop Blue 2053-60, Wedgewood Gray HC-146, and Palladian Blue HC-144 (personal favorite!) accomplish this serene look.

The modern nursery should be fun and striking. Sherwin Williams’s Thermal Spring SW 6761or Benjamin Moore’s Captivating Teal 649 are both a funky, fresh take to the nursery.

Too often we are afraid to use a dark color in a nursery but the outcome can become rich and timeless. Bold navy adds drama to the walls and pops the moldings. Pratt and Lambert’s Old World 1222 is a classic that not only adds the drama, but is warm and rich.

Paint color can be a challenge, but an exciting process especially for a nursery! Visit my paint consultation service for additional help.
